Sunday started out like any other day... however, this past Sunday's plans were to meet up with the Gang that went on the Utah AZ Rat Ride. The plan was to meet the group in Flagstaff and ride down 89 with them through Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Jerome, Prescott, Wickenburg and then back to Phoenix.
Before Jeff took off for the Utah ride, he was kind enough to loan me his GoPro Camera & SD Cards so I could experiment with it a bit. I got a late start on Sunday, leaving my place @ 7:30. Riding down the 101 I'd past 2 different Speed Zone Traps. The LEO's were parked below some overpasses hiding in the shade... Hmmmm, was this a sign that I should keep myself in check to avoid any lectures. I think so.
After gassing up in Fountain Hills and adjusting the camera, off I go. As I cruise up 87, minding my own business, a Helicopter passed overhead pretty damn low. The aircraft followed the road a bit until the first set of sweepers and then turned around & headed back towards Phx.
The next few pictures are of cruising up Hwy 87. The ever so chase, chasing my shadow, will I ever catch him…
As I approach a few S’s in the road, I came upon a Slow @ss Beemer… ok, so maybe he was moving along @ approx 70-75 mph. He was still in my way of enjoying this section of the road…
A few more shots of Hwy 87 North of Payson…
The next couple of shots I think were pretty cool. The first was taken as I was passing four cars. The speed & vibration gave the pictures a interesting effect, as if I were getting ready to jump to Warp Speed…
The following was taken as I was going through the Train Tunnel as you enter Winslow, Az. I could not have planned this shot if I tried…
I have gone through Winslow a few times before but never came across this following location. I only found out about it from one of the Motorcycle Mag’s that I receive. I decided to find it this time passing through. It wasn’t hard to find. It is one block West of the First light as you enter Winslow along Hwy 87 heading North. This street is a One Way Street heading East. To get to the spot, you need to go North one block, then West one block, then South to the corner…
From Winslow I headed down I-40 to meet up with those on the Utah Ride. As I arrive at the intersection of I-40 & I-17 around 11:40 AM, I’d received a call from Jeff. Man, I love having the Bluetooth set-up in my helmet allowing me to took calls while riding… Jeff said that they were in Camp Verde and were going to ride through Payson on the way back to Phx. Since I already went through Payson, I told Jeff to tell the group that I would not be joining them and to enjoy their ride. Time to make a split second decision… where to now.
Well, I’m already in Flagstaff… Do I turn South and head down Hwy 89 to Oak Creek Canyon & Prescott… Do I go North to the Grand Canyon… or do I continue West and go along Route 66?
I’d decided to head over to the section of Route 66 that runs North of I-40 from Seligman to Kingman. I have never ridden this section of road in Arizona & was looking forward to it. As I’m heading West on I-40, I’d reached down to grab the GoPro to make sure it was still taking shots. The following was an interesting picture… I call it “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble”…
After exiting I-40, my First stop was the Historic Route 66 Road Sign…
Next stop was in Seligman to have some lunch & to grab something to drink. It was a bit warmer then I expected it to be. I’d stopped off at the Snow Cap Road Side Restaurant…
The Public Restrooms…
The cast of the Great Animation “Car’s”…
There’s not to see beyond Silegman… nothing in Peach Springs. The following shots were taken right pass Truxton…
The next interesting spot was Hackberry. I did not stop here for it’s just a miles past Truxton and I’ve never been one for stopping much. I continued onto Kingman so I may catch Hwy 93 back into Phx.
I have no idea when I took the following shot… I might even start using this one as my Avatar…
As Jeff can testify, I’m not much of one for cleaning my Helmet Visor… as I didn’t during this trip. This is what the helmet looked like at the end of my Sunday Cruise…
All in All, it was a Great Day of riding. Here is a map of the route that I took…
The GoPro worked out Great. However for the pictures that I think I would have been interested in would have been of the Vista’s that I was passing instead of all of the road shots that I took. I definitely think the camera should have been mounted higher and maybe pointed out sideways. This would also eliminate having to remember to clean the camera lens.
Over all mileage was 580 Miles, time was just shy of 11 hours, no incidents or performance awards… ;D
